Why does everyone love Mechu?

Stick to Vodbull

We all love a good night out, particularly one involving dressing up and feeling glam. And with its strict-ish dress code and self-proclaimed “luxurious VIP” atmosphere, Mechu should be many girls’ and guys’ idea of heaven.

But it’s not: it’s shit, and everybody knows it.

For starters, if you want anything other than vodka, you might want to extend your overdraft. At a whacking £4.95 each, you’re more likely to get tiddly accidentally inhaling other people’s alcoholic fumes, than you are knocking back Jägerbombs.

All dressed up

Not a happy bunny

As well as being pricey, Mechu is also pretty small. In theory, this would be fine… if they played decent music. In reality, it leaves you nowhere to run from the endless stream of the worst kind of R&B. If you’re hoping for some classic noughties sing-a-longs or a bit of house, this is not the place for you.

Aside from the club itself, the next major problem are the people who frequent it. In a place that claims to be as classy as Mechu does, you’d expect a higher calibre of people than you might elsewhere. But the harsh reality is, they’re often much, much worse.

Something about Mechu seems to attract the type of guy who will randomly grope you in the middle of the dance floor, then act completely outraged when you don’t immediately begin to run, hand-in-hand, straight to the taxi line for your own little after party.

Constantly drinking through the pain

All of these atrocities would have us questioning whether or not to grace Mechu with our presence, even if it was the only Thursday night student event in Birmingham. But with Vodbull outranking Mechu in every sense except dress code, there’s really no question. Vodbull doesn’t claim to be anything more than it is, and when you go there you can expect cheap drinks, fun music, and even a free t-shirt if you’re lucky.

If you’re looking for a classy night out, you’re probably not going to find one in Birmingham. But don’t let that stop you. Get glammed up anyway and get ready to embrace a night full of fun you probably won’t even remember. And most importantly, avoid Mechu and its crappy drinks, crappy music and crappy guys at all costs.
